Just a Thought with Pastor Bill

May 2, 2025 By Bill Burnham

Just a Thought: Our desires are actually revealed in our deeds. What we are most focused on determines what we do because what we do is what we want to do. I have said for years “People do what they want to do.” And what I mean by that is, people have a tendency to do what they want to (right or wrong). If you want to attend a worship service, you will and if you don’t you won’t. If you want to live for the Lord you will, and if you don’t, you won’t. If you want to be able to do things, eat food and have a roof over your head; you go to work so you can have the money to do those things or you don’t. If you want to go here or there or you don’t, you do or don’t. What you do is what you want to do. I don’t mean for this to sound confusing; it is just a fact; people do what they want to do. And because this is true, our desires are actually revealed in our deeds. James says this is also how right desires are revealed in us. “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” (Js 3:13) Good deeds are a result of good desires and as our desires become the pursuit of our life, whatever our desires are, that is the kind of deeds they will produce. What do your deeds say about your true desires today? We can all look back and say, I wish I had done or not done this or that; but the reason we did or didn’t do those things is because of our true desire at the time. Be sure your true desires will be revealed, and they will do so by your deeds. What are you doing or not doing these days? Be sure whatever it is, it is because you want to. If you’re doing things you wish you weren’t or not doing things you wish you were; before anything can change, you must begin with looking at and making changes in what you really desire.
