Just a Thought with Pastor Bill

July 17, 2026 By Bill Burnham

Just a Thought: If you are attracted to new things and are always in search of the next big thing. I have bad news. Nothing is really new. I know people and you do too who are always going from one thing to the next. Looking for the newest thing. Looking for the bigger thing. In fact, looking for something or anything to bring them satisfaction. But nothing seems to satisfy them long before they have to find a new thing. But Solomon in all his wisdom and research concluded long ago, there isn’t any new things. Instead, what we have is the same old, same old. And the search just wears us down and leaves us empty. Here is what he concluded. “All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” (Eccl 1:8-9) Just because people don’t remember past achievements doesn’t mean they didn’t happen. And just because the seemingly new thing seems new, it really isn’t. For example, as one commentator put it.  “Man’s journey to the moon and the discovery of America, though different, were both explorations of distant places, involving adventure and risk. And the invention of dynamite and of the atomic bomb shared the element of discovering an “explosive.” Thus, what is true in the realm of nature – the constant repetition of previous accomplishments – is in essence true of the activity of people…” And, this is why people can’t seem to find any satisfaction in the new things. Because there really isn’t anything new including our behavior of thinking the next new thing will do it. That will bring me the satisfaction I have been looking for. If you really want to fulfill your satisfaction you must look to something very old and yet very current and relative. You must look to the Lord our God. He alone can satisfy your needs. Every one of us has been created with a God shaped void in our hearts that only a real relationship with the Lord can fill. Shinny objects won’t fit it. Seemingly new things won’t fit it. New relationships with other people won’t fit it. And try as we may, trying to cram other things in that void will only leave it and us empty and unsatisfied. If you are attracted to new things and are always in search of the next big thing. I have bad news. Those things won’t fill the God shaped void in your life. Only He can do that! Won’t you turn to the Lord today and desire just Him! Lord, I turn to You today. Please forgive me for trying to fill my life with anything and everything but a right and real relationship with You. Today, Lord, I desire just You. Not what You can do for me or give me. Just You. Come fill my life with You Lord through a right and real relationship and let me be satisfied by knowing You and enjoying Your presence. In Jesus name, amen.
