Just a Thought: Is there anything more satisfying than a cool drink of water when you are parched? If you have ever been the kind of thirsty that makes you say, “I could kill (figuratively speaking) for a drink of water.” You know what I mean. Thirst is one of those things you just have to satisfy! Jesus was speaking to a woman at a well one day. It was in the afternoon, maybe in the hotter part of the day. She was there to gather water. Jesus was there to give her living water so that she could share it with all those she would meet from that day forward. This was obviously an intentional meeting because the gospel of John tells us Jesus had to go here. And this meeting, conversation and the results of it are all that happened here. When Jesus asked the woman for some water from the well, she raised some obvious issues. I am a woman, you’re a rabbi. You shouldn’t be talking to me (a cultural thing). You don’t have anything to get water with. All valid issues. But she clearly understood the value of water and what it meant to be thirsty. So, no doubt she was a little taken back by Jesus’ answer. “Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (Jn 4:13-14). That is a pretty curious answer for someone who shouldn’t be asking a person anything and didn’t even have something to draw water with. But, as much as thirst needs to be satisfied, Jesus wasn’t talking about physical thirst. He was talking about satisfying a thirst much bigger and stronger. Jesus didn’t come to the well to meet a temporary or even immediate need. He was there to satisfy an eternal need. He was there to meet a need this woman (and many today) didn’t even know she had. You see she had a bucket to draw out physical water. Her life though not all it could or should be, was rocking along. She even had a good handle on religion. She knew who worshiped their God and where. And she even knew how they did it. But she was missing the one thing she needed the most. To know God! And there He was, right in front of her. The One who could satisfy her deepest need. And He was there just to see her. Is there anything more satisfying than a cool drink of water when you are parched? YES! When we take the living water (that personal eternal, life giving relationship with Jesus) we satisfy a need and thirst we may have never even known we were missing. My friend, when this girls’ eyes were opened to who Jesus was and what He was offering, it changed her entire life! And it so satisfied her, that she left her water pot. Went into town and told everyone about Jesus and the whole town came out and came to Jesus! Talk about quenching a thirst! Jesus meets more than just our physical needs. Friend, He is the answer to ALL your needs! And especially beginning with your eternal needs. And there is nothing so satisfying as having a right and personal relationship with God through Jesus! The greatest need we have in our lives is to know Jesus. If you know Him today, won’t you take a minute right know to confess your desperate need for Him in your daily life and for living. If you don’t know Him this way yet. STOP! Won’t you call upon Jesus to be your Lord and savior right now? And let Him begin to meet your greatest and your every need starting right now. Like the woman, He is here for you.
