Just a Thought with Pastor Bill

July 27, 2026 By Bill Burnham

Just a Thought: There is nothing quite so secure as being on solid ground. Have you ever been on a rocky boat ride or maybe a cruise when water was rough. If so, you know what it like to say, “Just get me on solid ground!” Maybe you’re like some people I know, and you don’t like flying. When you get on the plane you start praying and when you get off, you’re glad to be on solid ground again! Sometimes my wife gets a little anxious on trips. Driving on the interstate makes her nervous. I have heard her say, “When we stop, I am going to get out and say thank You Jesus! And kiss the ground.” I don’t think that has anything to do with my driving. She’s just nervous about everyone else. Right? Anyway, she is grateful to be on solid ground. David was expressing how he felt in the arms of God this way. Previously, he had been praying for and waiting for the Lord’s deliverance. While he waited, he felt he was on sinking or shifting sand. Sometimes we feel this way don’t we? The struggles of life can make us feel like we are on shaky ground. I have heard the expression more than once in reference to people’s troubles. “I feel like I am sinking or drowning in this situation.” This can be a scary and hopeless feeling. David expressed this before the Lord delivered him. He was feeling just this way. But then the Lord lifted him out of his despair and set his feet on solid ground! Makes me think of the old Hymn, “Love Lifted Me”! And that is exactly what trust in the Lord does! His love, mercy and grace lift us out of our despair and sets our feet on solid ground. The solid ground is The Lord’s deliverance. Knowing He has got me. Knowing He is in control. Knowing He is caring for me and taking care of all that is around me. There is nothing quite so secure as being on solid ground. That’s what David said, “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” (Ps 40:2) Praise the Lord, there is no more solid ground than the word of God that reminds us of His promises that are “yes and amen.” Where we are reminded of His presence. He is with us all the time. And His wonderful protection and provision are there for me as He is watching over us. My friend, if you’re feeling anxious, afraid or like you’re on sinking sand, call on the Lord. Put your trust in Him. He will lift you up and set our feet on solid ground. Dear Lord, thank You that when I feel like I am over my head or on sinking sand, I can put my trust in You. You Lord will lift me up and settle me down as you put my feet on solid ground. Thank you Jesus, for being my rock and my salvation. In Jesus name, amen.
