Just a Thought with Pastor Bill

May 14, 2026 By Bill Burnham

Just a Thought: Imagine the one you really have leaned on and counted on tells you, “I am leaving you but, I am sending someone in my place that will be even better.” You have never met this new person. You are not sure how a new person could be better than the one you have always been able to count on. What will it be like? How will all of this work out? And why does the one who has always been there have to leave anyway? This was no doubt the struggles the disciples were having when Jesus told them He was going to be leaving them. But He was asking the Father to send them one who would be with them and (even better) in them. I am sure their minds were scrambling trying to get a handle on this. Aren’t these the same kinds of struggles we have when one who has been our rock, support, and able to be counted on, leaves us? Whether it is due to a physical move, broken relationship or death. When the people we have always been able to count on are removed from our lives, there is a major void! Suddenly we are on our own. But we like the disciples have to realize we are not alone! Listen to what Jesus told them and imagine for a moment you are sitting down face to face with Him and He is telling you these words. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17) Did you hear it? I am sending you one who will be with you (and in you) forever! You mean He will never not be with me? Yes. You mean He will never ever leave me? Yes. You mean I will never be alone again, ever? Yes. This will be better or you because He won’t be with you sometimes, He will be with and in you all the time! He will know what you’re thinking. He will know what you’re feeling. He will be able to guide your thoughts, show you truth and direct your path all the time, every minute of every day. He will never leave you alone or on your own. He will comfort you, strengthen you and help you in every way. And He will be better to lean on than any person you could ever lean on. Wow! Who is He? He is the Holy Spirit. He is the counselor of truth. And He is in you if you are in Christ (Rom. 8:9). My friend, you have not been abandoned. Even if the one you always were able to count on is no longer there by your side. You have one better who is with you and in you forever! You may say, “But it was so good to have that one in my life.” Don’t overlook the best for the good. The Lord has given you something and someone far better to lean on. God the Holy Spirit. If you haven’t acknowledged Him lately, today would be a good day to say, “Hello Holy Spirit, thank You for being in me and in my life. May I learn to lean on You more than I lean on anything or anyone else. Speak to me. Comfort me. Strengthen me and guide my thoughts and steps today and every day! And thank You for never ever leaving me alone or on my own.” Imagine the one you really have leaned on and counted on tells you, “I am leaving you but, I am sending someone in my place that will be even better.” And you say, “Yes, Holy Spirit, You are so much better!”
